"Teacher of the Year"

John Hurd presented the Teacher of the Year. The committee consists of Bob Metzger, Roger Winslow, John Hurd, Kassia Perpich. A previous Teacher of the Year from 2007, Lynn Slanec also spoke about the award and what it meant for her and also gave kudos to our current Teacher of the Year. Our Teacher of the Year this year is Karry Swanson who teaches first grade and is in her 17th year of teaching. Her mother is a retired teacher and she developed an early love of education. She is involved in many activities that promote her profession. She has a special gift in reaching her kids in the classroom and captures their attention. A check was presented to her and also a $300 check was awarded so that she can use it for her classroom. |

Dean Paul, Superintendent of Alanson Public Schools came to talk about Career & Technical Education which has a program in Aviation Science & Technology which teaches flight instruction with certified flight instructors. This is a course which also gains college credits and is a chance for a very decent career for students wishing to avail themselves of this opportunity. |

PHSACF 25th Anniversary

DJ Jones was our presentation today and he discussed the 25th Anniversary of the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. When they first began there were concerns about the possibility of competing with other agencies in the community for limited resources. Instead this fine organization has raised a phenomenal amount of money which has supported many fine grants for the area and they have an impressive sum of $37 million dollars. This foundation will be in the community forever as all dollars are expended in the form of grants for the community. |

Governor's Club Visit

Today we had our annual visit from the District Governor, pictured here, Ed Swart and his lovely bride Carol, whom is also a fellow Rotarian. In fact, he met her at Rotary and also proposed to her at the Rotary meeting. Ed discussed the positive influence of Rotary and the great things that it does for the community and the world that we live in. |

Bergmann Center

Suzanne Muma was our guest speaker today and she spoke about the Bergmann Center from Charlevoix, Michigan today. The Bergmann Center works with clients who have either a mental illness or a dual diagnosis which is mental illness/substance use disorders. The Mission of Bergmann, Inc. is to provide Services that Enable Individuals with Mental and Physical Challenges the Opportunity to become Active Involved Members of the Community. He went over the budget of the club and the importance of the charitable fundraising that we do which generates revenue to meet our budget and the goals that we set for the club this year. |

Beards Brewery

Ben Slocum was our guest speaker today and he spoke about his venture with Beards Brewery (That's him in the background instead of the foreground). The friendly pooch in the front is Ava, his trusty sidekick. They began their brewery on Howard Street and have built it up substantially since their initial opening in 2012. His partner is Peter Manthei and they have built up an excellent business that is geared towards expansion and being highly sustainable.
