PROGRAM

We had an excellent program today:

Herb Carlson announced Jimmy Greene from Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. Greater Michigan Chapter, (ABC). He helps to facilitate opportunities for career growth in the construction industry through continuing education programs. Providing such programs is important to the construction industry to achieve knowledgeable employees and a safe work environment.

Jimmy stressed skilled trades as important to the local economic development as, good trade’s jobs create middle class economy because the trades pay in the $40 k to $57k range which is a very good wage. We have a shortage of skilled trades people in rural areas and the average age of existing trades people is 57 so, we are aging our way out of the workforce. We need high school graduates to decide that college is not for them and to remain local, so they can be trained in these valuable trades.

Greater Michigan Construction Academy is working with the Industrial Arts Institute in Onaway to bring skilled trade’s education to Northern Michigan. Tom Moran of Moran Iron Works has been working with this group to get this program going in Northern Michigan and we are very excited to see it happen.
