ROTARY INFORMER for April 22, 2009 Cool and gray. Spring coming??

President Bob called on Jim Beno for the 4 way test; we sang America the Beautiful and John Jeffrey gave an invocation.

Beno also led as we sang Smiles. Visiting Rotarians were Bill Paxton from Traverse City and Mr. &Mrs. Rob Toby from Charlottesville, VA. Kristy hurt her a tendon in her knee so she was not with us but we sent her flowers for secretary’s day.

Other guests were PHS seniors, Hanna Spon, Kevin Starkey, our exchange student Tina and her host brother Cody Pieffer. Also Dan Brown, Richard McDivitt, Mike Teska, Rene Grandon, Stan Thompson, and Bill. Couldn’t hear his last name.

Marty reminded us that the fund-raising pizza party will be May 11. Plan to order pizza that evening

Ruth reminded us to keep bringing in Olesons receipts. We get 1%.

Jock announced the annual work bee at Camp Daggett will be Saturday May 2. Meet at camp at 9 AM, We’ll be done by noon.

PDG Chris announced a $500 club match for donation to the Rotary Foundation. Great way to get a PHF at half price. Offer good until May 6.

Jane reminded us to RSVP for Dave Williams’s party which is Friday May 1.

Gail also reminded us that the hi-way clean-up is this Saturday. Meet at Town and Country Log Homes at 9AM.

Petoskey Rotary Club Charities will have 2 trustee positions open as of 7/1/09. The term is 2 years. The election will be held on 5/13/09. The nominating committee currently has 2 candidates.
1. Past Presidents Class--Chris Etienne
2. Member at Large( 3 year membership requirement) --Tim Dykstra.
Nominations from the floor will be taken at the club meeting on 5/609.

Nick White brought the program today. He has visited Cuba 8 times since 1995 primarily on missions sponsored by the United Methodist Church. He said it was hard to tell whether the badly rundown conditions were the results of 50 years of Communism or the recent hurricanes. He said there is severe rationing and many live in poverty. He also said that the suggestion that there is good health care is false, good health care is available only to those with cash to pay and those are mainly tourists. He said the recent hurricanes left 100,000 people homeless. He showed us a slide show of architecture. He explained that the major highways are designed to be runways for fighter planes. He said the people are friendly and industrious and like Americans. Signs proclaiming the “wonderful revolution” are every where but the people know better.
