101 Years of Service Above Self

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Petoskey; Exchange of Officer’s Dinner. President Jeff Wynder and incoming President Reg Smith officiated the meeting.

If you did not get the chance to attend, you can read about it in this newsletter.

Four-Way Test:  Neil Bidwell

Pledge/Anthem:  Howard Richards led us in God Bless America

Invocation:  Melissa Thompson

As Rotarians we gather together annually to mark the changing of the guard – from one club president to the next, as well as board members. We thankfully acknowledge the accomplishments, growth and service of the soon to be past president and offer best wishes and our assistance to the incoming club president in their pursuit of a promising year. While this ritual has been usually reliably executed, it’s been more uncertain in recent times and we really never know what’s ahead, now do we? We make strategic plans, try new steps, pursue opportunities to grow our ranks and build up our community, and yet, there will always be obstacles in transitional times that can make our best efforts fall short of our lofty goals. How do we keep going when it seems like it’s just not going the way we planned? Well, the Finns call it SISU, which has many translations like resilience, tenacity, mettle, perseverance... or blood & guts as my grandfather Waino Pihl used to say. There’s a new movie that kind of gives my grandpa’s version and it’s not quite what I wanted to use for inspiration tonight. So, I instead turned to one of my heroes, Helen Keller, for that unwavering, pragmatic optimism that some of us need to just keep on, keeping on….

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.” ~ Helen Keller

Thank you Jeff and Best Wishes Reg!
