ANNOUNCEMENTS

Frankenmuth Fondo:  Terry Newton will be participating in the Frankenmuth Fondo Ride on Saturday, August 12 and is looking for support! Donations to support his ride will help struggling and disadvantaged individuals and families in the local area. All proceeds from this event will go to the Frankenmuth Rotary Helping Hands Fund, which helps those in need—anything from replacing water heaters, paying overdue medical bills, helping abused women and children resettle, replace hearing aids for elderly people who are making decisions to eat rather than hear because they cannot afford both and many others. See Terry to make a tribute to his efforts.

Calendar Sales Update:  We ordered 2,500 calendars, with 1,400 coming to our club. A few members opted out of selling and will donate in-lieu of sales.

Fall Festival:  Fall Festival is around the corner on October 7! If you want to join the committee or help out, please contact Karen Ragland.

Thrive 45 Announcement:  Please join us at a special Thrive 45 engagement event on Thursday, August 3 in the Rose Garden at the Perry Hotel where our very own Jeff Wynder will be performing with Reg Smith’s daughter, Jessica, with their band Lejet.

NOTE ABOUT ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Going forward, announcements will be limited to Rotary-specific topics. If you have an announcement for personal or work projects, fundraisers, opportunities, or campaigns, you can email Terry Newton or Andrea Coronado to be shared in the newsletter and on social media. This will aid our efforts to keep meetings to one hour.

PROGRAM:  Bob Howse – 7000-mile Great Circle Waterway.

Bob Howse presented the program today about an adventure he had, in 1999 – 2000 which began October 1999 on a 44 foot trawler called the Terrapin. They went through 107 locks throughout their trip down to the Mississippi to St. Louis, over to Key West and the Dry Tortugas. They camped out in Ft. Lauderdale for about 10 days waiting to do a crossing to the Bahamas because of inclement weather. To the Bahamas they went to about 8 different anchorage stops and then went up the coast of Florida. They got up to Washington DC on July 4, 2000. He said the fireworks were spectacular. They were in New York and had pictures of the World Trade Center in July 2000 just before 9/11. From there they went through the Erie Canal in August of 2000. From there the went through Oswego and on to Lake Ontario to Trenton. They went through what is called a “Lift lock” on a couple of occasions. They were in the North Channel in September 2000 and then back to Petoskey. It took the just about a year for the entire trip. You two can do something amazing like this kind of a trip and there are all kinds of resources for you to do so. I have listed some here: They are members of the America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association that formed in about 1999 which has grown to about 6,000 members. They also have their own Facebook page listed here. Fascinating trip and a true testament of the love him and his spouse share for each other to make this journey.
