101 Years of Service Above Self

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Petoskey. President Jeff Wynder officiated the meeting. If you did not get the chance to attend, you can read about it from this newsletter.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.

We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.

In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.

PROGRAM

We began with a Paul Harris Fellowship presentation. Bill Hicklen presented a fellowship to his daughter-in-law Julie Borus. Bill feels she exemplifies Service Above Self and has been so loving and attentive to family members.

Next we received a presentation from Carrie Klingelsmith, executive director at Manna Food Project. Carrie gave us a refresher on all that Manna does:

- Rescues food from local vendors & redistributes to those in need

- Receives bi-weekly deliveries from Feeding America West Michigan

- Provides food to 40 pantries & meal programs in Charlevoix, Emmet and Antrim Counties

Manna was founded in 1986 as a soup kitchen and progressed into a food bank. It serves 300,000+ people annually and distributes 1.3 million pounds of food.

Manna also has a 'backpack program' for kids. It works with 31 elementary schools to distribute food to children in backpacks.

Manna is also known for its food rescue program. It collects 300,000+ pounds annually from area restaurants and grocery stores. It just received the "Recycler of the Year" award from Emmet County Recycling!

Manna's primary goal is to get more food out the door than in recent years. It recently launched a new summer feeding program for kids, and is going to resume mobile pantries. Manna hopes to do more outreach in northern Emmet County.

Next Week’s Program:  Jessica Rose Grima – Livingston County Rotarian with Mid Course Correction
