PROGRAM:  Carlin Smith – Baseball Program

From boners and muffs to three-finger-browns and making it to third base, Carlin Smith gave a rousing, if not salacious,  presentation on some big-hitters and “loveable losers” in baseball history.

Though the trivia questions were skewed towards audience members who lived through the great depression, and perhaps were even in the stands when the NY Giant’s Fred Merkle committed his base-running mistake (aka boner) in a game against the Chicago Cubs on September 23, 1908, a good time was had by all. And, some lucky winners took home peanuts and crackerjacks to celebrate their feats of obscure baseball knowledge.

But the real hero in all this is not any baseball player, but the unceremoniously unnamed “mother of Lawrence Goldberg” who was the ONLY person in the world to record what is arguably known as “the most famous call in sports.” Delivered by Russ Hodges, the broadcast captured the suddenness and exultation of the home run called the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" on October 3, 1951…“ The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!”  Broadcasts were not routinely taped in 1951, and none of the local radio or television stations were recording the game. The call survives only because a Brooklyn-based fan named Lawrence Goldberg asked his mother to tape-record the last half-inning of the radio broadcast while he was at work. Moms save the world again!
