Petoskey Rotary Noon Club NEWSLETTER

November 8, 2023

102 Years of Service Above Self

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Petoskey. President Reg Smith officiated the meeting.

If you did not get the chance to attend, you can read about it in this newsletter.

Pledge/Anthem:  Howard Richards led us in the Star-Spangled Banner

4-Way Test:  Georgia Abbott

Invocation:  Chris Hammond

First, you should know that today is Aide and Abet a Punster Day. I couldn't resist - I've left some on your tables to give you a bit of a chuckle.

On a more significant note -

Later this week, on November 11th, we will celebrate Veterans Day, commemorating the many sacrifices of those who are or who have been in uniformed service to our country.

It is a good time to remember words of the humanitarian and tennis legend, Arthur Ashe:

"True heroism is remarkable sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost."

PROGRAM:  Beth Wemigwase – Harbor Springs Area Historical Society

Since its founding in 1990 by a small group of concerned citizens committed to preserving the history of the area, the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society (HSAHS) has continued to grow.

For much of their history, HSAHS was a small, volunteer-run organization with limited paid staff. Board members and community members volunteered their time to host the annual Shay Days celebration as well as to welcome visitors to the summer reading room at Jo Ford Park.

HSAHS has expanded to include a full-time executive director, a diverse and full board of trustees and a reputation for hosting outstanding historically based programs and events. In addition, the organization embarked on a incredible journey to adaptively reuse the former city hall building as a local history museum.

Today, their reputation for strong historical programs continues inside the doors of the Harbor Springs History Museum where exceptional exhibits and hands-on activities will continue to tell the story of Harbor Springs’ unique history.

Together the HSAHS trustees and staff are constantly working toward the organization’s vision: To ensure that our collections and the stories they tell are accessible to all people. To be recognized regionally as a center of learning, imparting historical knowledge that shapes, informs and inspires the present and future.

Special Announcement:

Come join us for our fourth annual Rotary Holiday Party with optional Secret Santa.

We are expanding our holiday party to invite everyone in Rotary and family members to join us for a night of fellowship and celebration regardless if you participate in the secret Santa portion. Reg wants to “do it up big” this year! It really is a fun night and I would encourage everyone to attend.

Registration deadline to participate in secret Santa present exchange:  November 26th

Registration deadline to attend party:  December 4th

Date:  12/11/23

Time:  6-8pm

Location:  Perry Hotel Reycraft room

Cost:  $10 per person to attend. Spouses, significant others & family are welcome. Rotary account will be billed by Jim Wibby.

Cash Bar & appetizers provided.

Entertainment by Lejet

If you register to buy a present, you will receive an email on 11/27 with instructions to draw your name. Once drawn, you have a couple weeks to purchase a present for your giftee, wrap the present with three clues to your identity, and drop the present off at the Perry Hotel. On December 11th, attend the party, open your present and try to guess who gave it to you! We have learned some very interesting things about our fellow Rotarians at this event, it’s a night of lots of fun and laughter.

If you have any questions, please email or call Ashley DeCarteret for more details – ashley@harborbrenn.com or 231-838-0313 cell.
