Mental Health Announcement:  Rotary Club of Petoskey has identified mental and behavioral health care as a priority in our community—and we'll be working to support organizations that provide these vital services in Northern Michigan. Want to learn more? Join the League of Women Voters Northern Lower Michigan for a panel discussion on Mental Health Issues and Services in Northern Michigan on Wed. Oct. 11, 7pm-8pm. Hear from panel of professionals from health care and law enforcement as they discuss the mental and behavioral issues relevant to our community, and plans for a new Behavioral Health Center.

This will aid our efforts to keep meetings to one hour.

PROGRAM:

Kassia Perpich and Andrea Coronado

Working in the non-profit industry

Andrea and Kassia shared their combined 40 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector at various organizations including the Detroit Zoo, Shed Aquarium, PHSACF, Crooked Tree Arts Center, and Great Lakes Center for the Arts to name a few.

Non-profits work just like for-profit businesses in many ways, except often the products and services they produce can seem “intangible.” The main differences include how profits generated are put back into the organization rather than awarded to owners or shareholders. “Purchases” are often “donations” that have tax deductions for the donor.

There are more than 150 non-profits in Emmet County. When you think about many of the things you value and enjoy in our community – great trails and nature preserves, clean waters, inspiring art and performances, support for our neighbors in need, access to education, many of these things are tended to by non-profits.

Also discussed were some of the challenges that nonprofits face, such as low salaries and high workloads leading to burnout, prohibitive ideology on overhead costs, and difficulty monetizing their “product” which can lead to challenges attracting the best and brightest minds or taking creative risks to solve some of the worlds most complicated problems.

Your support of the causes you care about most is vital to enacting change and to lift up our most vulnerable community members in need.

Next Week’s Program:  Hands Only CPR

Two-Week Notification:  Andrea Koch was approved for membership into the Rotary Club of Petoskey at October 10, 2023 Board Meeting. This is the first of her two-week notification to the club where her Fireside Chat will be scheduled prior to her induction.

We also have Meghan DeWindt who will be transferring into our club from Sunrise Rotary.

Special Announcement:

We are looking for a couple more individuals to serve on the Vision Facilitation team for the Top of the Mitt region. There will be a training session in Cadillac on October 6th and later this fall in Sault Ste Marie, ON. If you could recommend one or more Rotarians, I will then contact them directly.

Here is some background information…

What is Vision Facilitation? It is a process in which trained District-level Facilitation Teams support local Rotary Clubs as they envision their future and develop plans to put those goals into action. It is an engaging process which involves club leaders and members in visioning and developing 3-year goals. Club Vision Facilitation takes place over a 4-hour session, typically 5:00–9:00PM or on a Saturday. During the session, a team of 3-4 District facilitators lead a process consisting of an overview presentation, writing exercise, data collection, consensus voting, and Action Plan development exercise. You can learn more about Vision Facilitation at www.rivisionfacilitation.org

District Facilitation Team. We need a team of trained Rotarians to serve as facilitators. Given the geographical size of D6290, we will have regional teams across the District - Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Traverse City, Top of the Mitt and Great North (Canada & UP). We hope to have 5-6 trained facilitators in each area so the time commitment might be once every few months. District Facilitation Teams volunteer their time to work with local clubs. If you are a snowbird, you can still serve as a facilitator when you are available.

Vision Facilitation Training. There will be a Vision Facilitation training session for all facilitators conducted by two members of the International Vision Facilitation Council (IVFC) on Friday, October 6th, from 1:00-8:00pm at the Evergreen Golf Resort in Cadillac. If you want to stay for the District’s Training Assembly on Saturday, October 7 from 9:00AM – 4:30PM in Cadillac, the District will cover the cost of your room on Friday night and pay for mileage if you attend both Friday & Saturday’s training. A block of rooms has been reserved for our group. To reserve a room, call 231-775-9947. Our group's booking ID is 28746. Breakfast will be provided Saturday morning.

If you can’t make the training on October 6th, we plan to hold another training session in Sault Ste Marie, ON later this fall.

Questions? If you have any questions, please contact me at schumakerjulie@gmail.com or 734-649-3317.

Please confirm your interest and availability ASAP. Thank you for considering serving on the Vision Facilitation Team.
