February 1, 2012
Is it really February? It feels more like late March. President Jim called on Steve Cross for the 4 Way Test, we sang America the Beautiful and Neil gave the invocation. Kendal and Howard, back from vacation, led us in The Band Played On and Smiles. We sound much better with the piano. There were no visiting Rotarians again this week and our other guest were Zola Murray and John Bauer’s, both seniors at PHS and Russ Dykstra. Ruth filling in for Chris let us know that there is a new Foundation Pool starting. Forms were on the tables or you can contact Chris. Remember the Blood Drive scheduled for this Friday, February 3 from 12-6. If you signed up be sure to be there to help. Mike reminded us that the spaghetti dinner is Feb. 9th. He passed out assignment sheets and if you want to help with sauce night on the 8th, be at the BVI about 5:00 pm. Jim passed around the sign up for the winter party at Billy Duff scheduled for February 19th. This is always a great time to meet and talk with other members who you don’t normally see on Wednesday s so be sure to sign up. Tim gave us info about the Manna Fundraiser on February 21 at Cava. Next week is a Club Assembly. Kristy introduced Grenetta Thomassey, PhD from Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council. She gave us an interesting and disturbing program on the numbers of medicines, both prescription and over the counter that end up in our lakes and streams and water tables. The Watershed Council, with the help of many local groups and agencies, has put out collection boxes to try and limit the effect from these drugs. Currently they also host three collection days in Emmet County and one collection day in Charlevoix during the year where people can drop off “drugs” with no questions asked. So far from 2008-2010 they have collected almost 900 lbs of pills. That was a very surprising number for all of us. This is an issue we all need to work on. For more information about the POD Collection Program and to learn about medications in our waters, please visit the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council's website at www.watershedcouncil.org
