With these days of political controversies and the COVID pandemic, each of us has been witness to criticism of one form or another.  And so, today, a couple observations about criticism:

1. “Never take criticism from someone from whom you would not take advice.” Mark Shields

2. “Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in her shoes.  Then, when you start criticizing her, you’re a mile away and she’s got to run after you in her socks.” Lee Child

ANNOUNCEMENTS

100 Acts of Service:  This year our club aspires to complete 100 Acts of Service for our 100 years. If you did something to serve others in the last week, please be sure to record it in our online survey -- click here. Thank you!

Spaghetti Dinner:  On April 22 we will hold our annual spaghetti dinner at the Grand Unity Events Center (1106 Charlevoix Ave., Petoskey). We are offering carryout service only, from 3:00 - 7:00 PM. Thanks to those who have volunteered for this event! Please contact Christian Smith with questions.

Beach Cleanup:  On Saturday, April 24 at 10:00 AM our club will participate with other service clubs in a beach cleanup at Petoskey State Park.  Please contact Jeff Wynder if you have any questions.

131 Roadside Cleanup:  Save the date! On Saturday, May 1 at 9:00 AM we'll meet at Walloon Lake Marina to clean up our usual three-mile stretch of Highway 131. The rain date is May 8. Stay tuned for more details. Please contact Tim Kaufman if you have any questions.

Club Survey on Returning to In-person Meetings:  Thank you to everyone who completed the survey to assess whether and how we should resume in-person meetings. Approximately 2/3 of the club provided feedback. 70% of respondents said they would be comfortable meeting in-person, and a vast majority said they would like meetings to be some combination of in-person and Zoom. Based on this feedback, in June we will attempt one in-person meeting and go from there. We've tentatively scheduled Wednesday, June 16 to be an in-person meeting at Pennsylvania Park or other outdoor location. Stay tuned for details.

4th of July Festivities:  Sunrise Rotary has taken over Petoskey's annual 4th of July festivities. They are asking other service clubs to become involved -- cash contributions, or join the program committee to plan the parade, etc. In its monthly board meeting, the Rotary Board of Directors approved a $1,000 donation toward 4th of July festivities. Please contact Karen Ragland if you are interested in helping with this on behalf of Noon Rotary.

PROGRAM

Our very own Rotarian, Chris Hammond, gave a fabulous presentation on the history of Camp Daggett and our club's longstanding involvement with it. Definitely worth a watch if you weren't present!! (All of our Zoom meetings are recorded. The link to watch is at the top of this bulletin.)

Next Week’s Program:  Lorelei Grigsby - Borgren Project - Global Poverty

Parting Shots:  Howard Richards closed with Don Redman, 1929 "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You"

Love makes me treat you the way that I do
Gee Baby, ain't I good to you there's
Nothing too good for a girl so true
Mom, ain't I good to you
I bought you furs for Christmas
And a diamond ring,
And a big Cadillac car, and everything
Love makes me treat you the way that I do
Gee Baby, ain't I good to you
Love makes me treat you the way that I do
Gee Baby, ain't I good to you there's
Nothing too good for a boy that is so true
Gee babie, ain't I good to you
I bought you a fur coat for Christmas
And a diamond ring,
And a great big Eldorado, and everything
Gee,
Baby ain't I good to you

Neil and Liz Ahrens visited with John and Kate Hurd in Asheville, NC, April 9, 2021. The Hurd’s
are living well there though, they do miss the camaraderie of our Club.
