Translator, Long Walk: From France to China along the Great Silk Road

Dan Golembeski, a French-English translator, shared his experience translating Bernard Ollivier's three-volume series "Longue marche: From France to China along the Great Silk Road." Golembeski's journey into translation began after a career in engineering, which was eventually overtaken by his passion for language and French culture. His academic pursuits led him to an MA and PhD in French Linguistics and a career teaching college-level French.

During his presentation, Golembeski shared his discovery of Ollivier's work during a trip to France, which inspired him to translate the series into English. Ollivier, at the age of 62, embarked on a remarkable journey to walk the ancient Silk Road, documenting his experiences in regions often unfamiliar to Western readers. Through his translation, Golembeski aims to bring Ollivier's vivid encounters with diverse cultures and landscapes to an English-speaking audience, allowing readers to walk alongside Ollivier as he uncovers the world—and himself—through the simple act of walking.

Next Week’s Program:  Calendar Launch with Karen Ragland, and a short Alzheimer’s program featuring Sunrise Rotarian Sally Crowley.
