Howard Richards led us in America the Beautiful

Four Way Test:  Peter Olson

Invocation:  Jean Frentz

Our Gross National Product, now, is over $800 billion dollars a year, but that Gross National Product - if we judge the United States of America by that - that Gross National Product counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage.

It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for the people who break them.  It counts the destruction of the redwood and the loss of our natural wonder in chaotic sprawl.

It counts napalm and counts nuclear warheads and armored cars for the police to fight the riots in our cities.  It counts Whitman's rifle and Speck's knife, and the television programs which glorify violence in order to sell toys to our children.

Yet the gross national product does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play.  It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages, the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials.

It measures neither our wit nor our courage, neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country, it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.

And it can tell us everything about America except why we are proud that we are Americans.

Robert F. Kennedy

Pints for Polio:  Tomorrow, Thursday, December 5, 2019 head to the Noggin Room at 5:00 PM for “Thirsty Thursday.” John Scholten will discuss his recent bike ride across the country. Plus, Noggin Room will donate 15% of sales that night to Rotary’s PolioPlus program (thank you, Reg!!) Remember, every dollar raised for polio eradication will be matched 2-for-1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Eat, drink and be merry!!

Sponsor a Madrigal for $20:  At next week’s Rotary meeting, we will be treated to a performance by the Madrigals, Petoskey High School’s own renaissance-themed choir group! The kids usually join us for lunch before their performance. If you would like to help cover the cost of their lunch, please bring $20 next week.

Also, please email Reg Smith (regs@staffords.com) if you plan to bring guests to next week’s meeting. He needs a headcount for food planning.

Upcoming Club Meeting Dates:  The next two Rotary meetings fall on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Because of that, we will move those meetings to December 26 and January 2. On December 26 Rotarians present will order off the regular lunch menu. We will also draw the $5,000 raffle winner that day!! January 2 will be a “regular” Rotary lunch buffet.

Please email Reg (regs@staffords.com) if you plan to attend either of these meetings, so he can get an accurate head count for food.

Wreaths Across America:  Happening Saturday, December 14. Meet at J.W. Filmore’s at 10:15 AM to enjoy breakfast together beforehand. Or meet Rotarians directly at Greenwood Cemetery at 11:45 AM. We will remember and honor veterans by laying holiday wreaths on their graves

Salvation Army Bell Ringing:  Happening Friday, December 20. Jeff Wynder circulated a sign-up sheet. Bell ringing not only supports the Salvation Army’s work, but it’s a great way to get to know the fellow Rotarian you will be paired with! Please sign up for a one-hour shift

Toys for Tots:  Please bring a toy or cash donation to an upcoming Rotary meeting, to brighten the holidays for a child in need. Contact Dave Thomas with any questions

Calendar Sales:  All calendars should be sold by January 15, 2020. When filling out the calendar sales form, write YOUR NAME in the “sold by” line. Some folks have been incorrectly writing our club name. We have sold as of today 1011 calendars with 872 yet to be sold

Doug Basel:  Doug Basel is now in Highland Cottage. Doug has been a faithful member of our club for decades and Rotary is like family. Please take time to call or pay him a visit if you can

Program:

NCMC nursing scholarships:  We began with an award ceremony! Terry Newton awarded Rotary scholarships to five NCMC students studying nursing and non-nursing medical professions.  The following students each received $1,500 to further their education: Ashley Adkison, Medical Assistant; Aaron Beard, Paramedic; Kali Van Dreumel, 1st Year Nurses Student, Bao Yang, 2nd Year Nurses Student; Jamie Pagels Dean of Nurses Program was also in attendance.

Then we were joined by Tory Thrush from Char-Em ISD Career Technical Education.

Tory gave an interesting presentation about the future of the Michigan workforce, and what Char-Em ISD is doing to help kids prepare for it.

In the future, roughly 2/3 of jobs will not require a traditional four-year college degree. Rather, they may require some college education and/or an alternate certification. Job growth is expected in construction, healthcare, law enforcement, automotive, IT, energy production, etc.

To help students prepare for this, Char-EM ISD offers career and technical education programs at 11 schools, for high school students to explore alternatives to seeking a four-year degree after graduating. Click here to learn more
