Inner Voices

“It’s impossible”, said Pride.

“It’s risky”, said Experience.

“It’s pointless”, said Reason.

“Give it a try”, whispered the Heart.

Which inner voice do you listen to most often?  We sometimes may miss a tremendous opportunity by listening to the wrong voice.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

100 Acts of Service:  This year our club aspires to complete 100 Acts of Service for our 100 years. If you did something to serve others in the last week, please be sure to record it in our online survey -- click here. Thank you!

Spaghetti Dinner:  Save the Date! On April 22, 2021 we will hold our annual spaghetti dinner at the Grand Unity Events Center (1106 Charlevoix Ave., Petoskey). We will be offering carryout service only, from 3:00 - 7:00 PM. To celebrate our 100-year anniversary, this year's spaghetti dinner will be FREE for the community. There will be no ticket sales. Members will be billed $100 this year (instead of $90). We recognize that not selling tickets means members may not have the chance to recoup their individual $100 expense. If this creates a hardship for you, please don't hesitate to say so -- contact Christian Smith directly.

Paul Harris Fellowships:  This year we have 10 people and are running two PHF pools! Thank you to all who signed up for this. Dibby Smith also received several new pins to share with various members: a PHF +2 pin for Reg Smith and Susan Metzger, a PHF +5 pin for Steve Brummler, PHF +6 pins for Bill Hicklin and Terry Newton, and lastly a PHF +8 pin for Bob Metzger.

Petoskey Rotary Club Charities Inc. (PRCCI):  Every year PRCCI makes grants (usually in the $1,000 - $4,000 range) to a variety of local nonprofits. The PRCCI grant application is now available on our club's website. The deadline to apply is March 15. Please contact Dianne Litzenburger if you have any questions -- and be sure to let local nonprofits know about this opportunity!

Speaker March 10, 2021:  Jane Millar let us know that our presenter for our club meeting will be the past RI Director John Smarge about HANWASH.

Winter Sports Park centennial project update:  Kendall Klingelsmith noted that the Petoskey City Council approved fundraising / grant writing for Winter Sports Park upgrades. Kendall will be seeking a $300,000 grant this spring from the Natural Resources Trust Fund to construct a roof over the hockey rink, turning it into a year-round recreational pavilion. He asked Rotarians to consider writing a letter of support to include with his application. Kendall will share more details about that soon. In the meantime, feel free to contact him if you have any questions or if you would like to submit a letter of support.

PROGRAM

Today we were joined by Ron Olson, General Manager of Odawa Casino. Ron made remarks on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected Casino operations.

For example, the Casino was going to build a new hotel onsite, but it had to put that project on hold. Attendance is down approximately 40% right now. Plus the Casino - which used to be open 24/7 -- now closes for 4-5 hours a night for deep cleaning of its facilities.

One positive thing to emerge during the pandemic is the Casino's new "spare change" program. In a nutshell, Casino visitors now have the option to donate the coin portion of their winnings to local charities. This has been generating $4,000 - $5,000 a month! In turn, the Casino identifies smaller nonprofits in the area to donate to.

Please contact Mary Van De Car if you have local nonprofits to suggest. His email address is:

Next Week’s Program:  Centennial – Winter Park Club involvement – Jean Frentz

Two-Week Notification:  The Board of Directors held a Podium Board Meeting today. Eric Leister’s application into the Rotary Club of Petoskey was approved and this is his two-week notification.

Parting Shots:  Howard Richards closed with 1963 Jimmie Soul “Make an Ugly Woman Your Wife”

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

A pretty woman makes her husband look small
And very often causes his downfall
As soon as he married her and then she starts
To do the things that will break his heart

But if you make an ugly woman your wife
A-you'll be happy for the rest of your life

An ug-a-ly woman cooks meals on time
And she'll always give you peace of mind

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife

So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Don't let your friends say you have no taste
Go ahead and marry anyway
Though her face is ugly, her eyes don't match
Take it from me, she's a better catch

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you

Say man!
Hey baby!
I saw your wife the other day!
Yeah?
Yeah, an' she's ugly!
Yeah, she's ugly, but she sure can cook, baby!
Yeah, alright!

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you
