STRIVE Update: Georgia Abbott and Nikki Devitt attended Petoskey High School's senior awards ceremony this week to present three awards to STRIVE students. Unfortunately due to the pandemic it has been an extremely difficult year to run STRIVE. Georgia was very sad to report that four STRIVE students dropped out of school. Still, other STRIVE students persevered. Rotary awarded one student with a full tuition scholarship to NCMC, and two other students for significantly improved GPAs. Georgia concluded her update by asking us to keep all STRIVE students in mind. They need us to be beacons of strength and hope during this extra-challenging time.
Half Marathon Aid Station: Save the date! On Saturday, May 29 Rotary will once again host an aid station for people running in the half marathon that takes place on the Little Traverse Wheelway during Memorial Day weekend. Rotarians cheer the runners passing by, as well as offer water and snacks. Karen Ragland is organizing it this year. Please stay tuned for more details, she will be recruiting folks to sign up for 2.5 hour shifts.

4th of July Festivities: Sunrise Rotary has taken over Petoskey's annual 4th of July festivities. They are asking other service clubs to become involved -- cash contributions, or join the program committee to plan the parade, etc. In its monthly board meeting, the Rotary Board of Directors approved a $1,000 donation toward 4th of July festivities. PROGRAM Centennial Committee – Tidbits of Club History
Today we were treated to a delightful presentation by our very own Bob Metzger, who has been part of our 'Centennial History Committee.' Since this part of the program did not record I will be sending out an email PowerPoint Presentation that Bob did.
Bob gave a presentation highlighting unusual tidbits about our club from over the years. For example:
Most of our meetings have happened at the Perry Hotel, Bay View Inn and Bay View Golf Club.
The first official Petoskey Rotary Club meeting was held in The Braun Hotel (where the Gattles store used to be in downtown Petoskey).
Our first known meeting at the Perry Hotel was May 31, 1922.
The farthest away a Petoskey Rotary meeting took place was in the Porcupine Mountains.
Our club was once stood up by John Philip Sousa, as a program speaker, in July 1931.
In 1932 our club organized the 'barrel project' -- providing barrels full of food to people during the Great Depression.
In 1936 our club hosted I Scream for Ice Cream -- we distributed free ice cream and cookies to 550 Traverse City and Alden children visiting for the day.
In 1956 we formed the Rotary Wheels -- a little league baseball team that we sponsored.
