PROGRAM  Jill O’Neill – Great Lakes Center for the Arts

Today we were joined by Jill O'Neill, executive director of the Great Lakes Center for the Arts.

Jill talked about the Center's vision --  to be recognized as a leading Midwest performing arts presenter and provider of broadened cultural opportunities. She gave us a photo tour of the 40,000 square foot facility, which includes a 525-seat theater, community engagement room, a rooftop terrace and several lobby areas.

Jill noted that the Center has all-LED lighting, which is unusual for performing arts centers. Most are in the process of converting to LED lighting over time, since their buildings/facilities are older. LEDs allow for a more flexible lighting palette and they are cooler for artists when on stage.

Throughout the pandemic, the Center made a decision very early on to remain open as much as they could, even if that meant adhering to 25% capacity and other regulations (rather than shutting down all together as many performing arts centers did nationwide). Last summer the performances were like a "living room experience" that allowed for an intimate connection with the artists.

Jill then spent time highlighting the Center's various programming. The Dorothy Gerber Strings Program provides free school-based strings classes in 10 locations across Emmet, Charlevoix and Antrim Counties. The Next GEN program offers performing arts experiences tailored to youth and teens.

Lastly, Jill previewed the events being offered this summer at the Center -- visit their website at http://www.greatlakescfa.org to see their full calendar of events!

Next Week’s Program:  Kevin Deegan-Krause/Doug Mallory – professor at Wayne State – Rank Choice Voting

Parting Shots:  Howard Richards closed with 1928 Irving Berlin “Puttin’ on the Ritz”

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to
Why don't you go where fashion sits?
Puttin' on the ritz

Different types who wear a day coat, pants with stripes
And cutaway coat, perfect fits
Puttin' on the ritz

Dressed up like a million dollar trooper
Tryin' hard to look like Gary Cooper (super duper)

Come, let's mix where Rockefellers walk with sticks
Or umbrellas in their mitts
Puttin' on the ritz

Have you seen the well-to-do?
Up and down Park Avenue
On that famous thoroughfare
With their noses in the air
High hats and arrow collars
White spats and lots of dollars
Spending every dime for a wonderful time

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to
Why don't you go where fashion sits?

I want you to move
Puttin' it on, puttin' it on
