PROGRAM: Andrea Koch, STRIVE
Andrea Koch, with the assistance of Sarah McDonnell, gave us a heartwarming summary of the STRIVE program, celebrating its 31 st year. This year there have been 19 students participating with 13 of them seniors. Each student has a mentor who is their support person, cheerleader, and occasionally confident. The students and mentors have one joint meeting a month, with at least one other personal contact (e-mail, text, or in-person) monthly. The meetings this year have included field trips to: Lake Effect Restoration, NCMC, Drost, Munson Community Health Center, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Counsel, plus speakers/programs on the CTE programs available through the ISD, and Non-Profit /entrepreneurial experimentation. Healthy foods with the option of food classes became a priority, substituting for some of the standard pizza meals. The students also had classes in time management. The STRIVE banquet was held at the Bay View Inn, celebrating the students with money for attendance at meetings, achievement/attitude, and scholarships. Andrea & Sarah shared the stories of two of the scholarship winners. This program is supported by the club and costs about $10,000. Members can donate directly to STRIVE to provide food, scholarships, and activities. Interested? Talk to Andrea. We are proud that we can support vulnerable students in such a direct and positive way. If you can be a mentor or financial supporter, your help would be welcome.
Next Week’s Program: Chelsea Platte, NCMC, Dental Hygiene Program
