Shoulders
by Naomi Shihab Nye
A man crosses the street in rain,
stepping gently, looking two times north and south,
because his son is asleep on his shoulder.

No car must splash him.
No car drive too near to his shadow.

This man carries the world's most sensitive cargo
but he's not marked.
Nowhere does his jacket say FRAGILE,
HANDLE WITH CARE.

His ear fills up with breathing.
He hears the hum of a boy's dream
deep inside him.

We're not going to be able
to live in this world
if we're not willing to do what he's doing
with one another.

The road will only be wide.
The rain will never stop falling.Naomi Shahib Nye, “Shoulders” from Red Suitcase.

Personal Updates

Dianne Litzenburger noted that Melissa Colby is leaving our club due to a new job at Lake Superior State University. We are glad for her new job, but sorry to see her go!! Sounds like Melissa might transfer to the Sault St. Marie Club though.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Calendars:  Members have done a great job picking up their 2021 calendars--thank you for attention to this! There are just 13 people left who need to receive theirs. Please contact Karen Ragland ASAP if you are one of those folks. Karen hopes to have all calendars distributed in the next week.

Also, Ashley Whitney mentioned that Harbor/Brenn is a drop-off site for Rotary calendar money. There's a slot in the front door you can slide an envelope through. Make sure the envelope is sealed and clearly addressed to Rotary.

Opening on the PRCCI board:  Petoskey Rotary Club Charities, Inc. (PRCCI -- the charitable arm of our club) has an opening on its board for the Secretary role. This position was recently held by Melissa Colby, who sadly just left our club due to a new job at Lake Superior State University.  We need someone to step in and complete Melissa's term, which expires on June 30, 2021 -- with an option to extend if interested. If you are interested in the position or learning more about the position, please contact Dianne Litzenburger at 231.330.2444 or dclitzenburger@gmail.com. Please note that you need to have been a member of our club for at least 3 years to be eligible for this position.

Roadside cleanup on Sat. 9/26:  Join us for our semi-annual roadside cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 8:45 AM! We have 13 people signed up and need a few more. Rotary maintains a 3-mile stretch of US-31. The sign-up list has been emailed through ClubRunner. There are 20 slots though several slots have been signed up for from last week.

Centennial Planning:  As you know, next year is our club's 100th anniversary.  Liz Ahrens noted that we as a club need to move forward in selecting our big Centennial service project sometime soon. Before COVID-19 hit, our club was exploring three options: (1) Renovations/upgrades at NCMC, (2) Renovations/upgrades at the Winter Sports Park or (3) Creation of a Dog Park. We need to move forward with presentations on those options and come to a final decision. So, in late August through early September, committees that investigated each option will present their information to the club and then we will do an official vote. These programs will be on the following dates:

August 26, 2020 – North Central Michigan College

September 2, 2020 – Winter Sports Park

September 9, 2020 – Dog Park

PROGRAM

Today Kendall Klingelsmith, fellow Rotarian and Petoskey Parks & Rec Director, presented the second of three service projects Rotary is exploring for our centennial year:  This project focuses on upgrades to the Winter Sports Park to enhance current amenities / add new ones that turn the park into more of a year-round community recreational facility. Kendall highlighted upgrades including lodge deck expansion, adding a 'magic carpet' for the sledding hill, and a pavilion for the hockey/soccer rink. Here is a link on the history of the Winter Sport's Park: Link

Next Week’s Program:  Kendall Klingelsmith on the Dog Park Centennial Project

Parting Shots:  Howard Richards treated us to The Playmates “Beep Beep-Little Nash Rambler” done in 1958. I can no longer provide links to songs because of copyright concerns. You can always look these up on YouTube.

Lyrics

While riding in my Cadillac, what, to my surprise,
A little Nash Rambler was following me, about one-third my size.
The guy must have wanted it to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn. Beep! Beep!
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn.

Refrain:
Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
His horn went, beep, beep, beep. (Beep! Beep!).

I pushed my foot down to the floor to give the guy the shake,
But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind; he still had on his brake.
He must have thought his car had more guts
As he kept on tooting his horn. Beep! Beep!
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn.

Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
His horn went, beep, beep, beep. (Beep! Beep!).

My car went into passing gear and we took off with dust.
And soon we were doin' ninety, must have left him in the dust.
When I peeked in the mirror of my car,
I couldn't believe my eyes.
The little Nash Rambler was right behind, you'd think that guy could fly.

Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
His horn went, beep, beep, beep. (Beep! Beep!).

Now we're doing a hundred and ten, it certainly was a race.
For a Rambler to pass a Caddy would be a big disgrace.
For the guy who wanted to pass me,
He kept on tooting his horn. Beep! Beep!
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn.

Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
Beep, beep. (Beep, beep.)
His horn went, beep, beep, beep. (Beep! Beep!).

Now we're doing a hundred and twenty, as fast as I could go.
The Rambler pulled alongside of me as if I were going slow.
The fellow rolled down his window and yelled for me to hear,
Hey, buddy, how can I get this car out of second gear?
