ANNOUNCEMENTS

GET OUT THE VOTE – We are in the final stretch.  Please remember to get your 10 ‘Yes” votes to the polls on Tuesday.

PEDALING FOR POLIO – John Scholten and Gary Baxter clocked 227.5 miles as they pedaled for polio.  Now we need to make good on our pledges.  $1,190.00 was pledged so; if you have not submitted your money, please do so.  If you were not around to pledge last week, John and Gary are still accepting donations.  Good job gentlemen!

CLUB Runner – Ingrid Flemming wanted to personally and publicly thank Terry Newton for his work on populating the committee sections on Club Runner.  This will make Board reporting and routine reports to Rotary International easier.  As with any new initiative, there are a few bits of information still needed.  Ingrid will be e-mailing a number of committee members for updates.

HELP FIGHT LOCAL HUNGER - Jean Frentz distributed the Meijer purchasing cards.  Meijer developed a program to help neighborhood food pantries struggling to keep their shelves stocked.  Bring the donation card to Meijer’s where it will be purchased for $10.00. Meijer will convert this donation card into a Meijer Food-Only Gift card and donate it to Manna.  They will also match your $10.00.  This donation period begins November 1, 2014.   During the week of hunting season, Meijer will give $20.00 for each donation of $10.00.  Please use the card.

GREAT LAKES ORCHESTRA CONCERT – Amy Cross will be performing Sunday, November 2, 2014, at 4:00 pm.  The location is Castle Farms in Charlevoix.  Please go out and listen to that exquisite voice and for a double bonus the event is free.

COAST GUARD BASE TOUR – The November 6th Tour has been postponed.  Due to the terrorist attack in Canada, the Coast Guard is on high alert and cannot accommodate visitors at this time. Bill Collins will let us know when the trip will be rescheduled.

CALENDAR SALES – SELL, SELL, SELL!  The return envelopes will be found on your tables every week.

PROGRAM

THE ROLE OF THE MERCHANT MARINE – Steve Brummeler arranged to have his son, Ryan, share his experiences touring the globe with the merchant marines.  Ryan Brummeler is a graduate of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City.  This is a four year academic program awarding appropriate certifications as well as a B.S. in Business.  The United States Merchant Marine is the fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels, operated by either the government or private sector that engage in commerce or transportation of goods.  Merchant mariners move cargo and passengers between nations and within the United States, operate and maintain deep sea merchant ships, tugboats, towboats, dredges and other waterborne craft on the oceans, the Great Lakes, rivers, canals, harbors and other waterways.  Ryan showed pictures of a number of these international ports and waterways and explained what was transported.  This is one young American to be proud of!
